Occupation: actress Years active :1970s - 80s Spouse(s): None

Bindiya Goswami (born 8th August, 1961) was a Bollywood actress. She acted in Hindi films from the late 1970s to early 1980s.

Pesonal life and education

Bindiya was born in Mumbai.

She had supposedly claimed that Vijay Arora, her leading man from her first film, harassed her.[1]. Her personal life became scandalous when she married her frequent leading man Vinod Mehra. He was already a married man who walked out on a supposedly unconsummated marriage to Meena Broca to be with Bindiya. Both of their families looked down on the marriage, which soon fizzled.[2] Thereafter, Bindiya would give up her acting career to marry director J.P. Dutta, with whom she has two daughters, Nidi and Siddhi.

Film Career

Bindiya was discovered when she was just fourteen years old by superstar Hema Malini's mother at a party who felt that there was a resemblance to Hema and recommended her to film producers. Her first Hindi film was "Jeevan Jyothi" where she co-starred with Vijay Arora whose career was on the decline, and the film flopped. Bindiya forged on ahead and soon became a success starring for director Basu Chatterjee in Khatta Meetha (1977) and Prem Vivah (1979). However, her biggest hit was for director Hrishikesh Mukherjee in the comedy Golmaal (1979).[3] That film's success led her to take Hema Malini's place in the big-budget film Shaan (1980), because Hema was busy with her other film commitments.[4]

Career as Costume Designer

Bindiya has taken up designing costumes for female stars such as Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor for her husband J.P. Dutta's films, such as Border(1997), Refugee (2000) and LOC Kargil (2003).[3]

She was the winner of the Ford's Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest for 1996 and is currently one of the mainstream actresses in Bollywood. Early life

Basu was born in New Delhi, India, to a Bengali family. She is the second of three daughters to her parents, the elder being Bidisha, and the younger—Vijayeta. Although she was born in New Delhi, her family later moved to Kolkata.

According to her, she had come into modeling and acting quite by accident, because initially she had planned to study medicine.[2] Basu studied science till the 12th standard at Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir and later took up commerce at The Bhawanipur Gujarati Education Society College, an undergraduate college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. In Kolkata, she did modelling and rampshows partime. Although, as pointed above, she intended to become a doctor, her aversion for dissections made her opt for chartered accountancy.[3] However, in 1996, she met well-known model Mehr Jessia in Kolkata; the latter suggested that Basu take part in the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. She eventually participated, and won the contest.[2]

Career

After winning the Ford Godrej Cinthol contest, Basu was flown to New York by the Ford Company, where she had a successful modelling career at the age of 17.[2]

Basu made her film debut in Abbas Mustan's Ajnabee, with Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor. She played a married woman who goes all out to woo her husband’s married friend, and eventually won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for her performance.

In 2002, Basu starred in Vikram Bhatt's thriller Raaz. The film was a big commercial success and surfaced as the biggest hit of that year.[4] For her performance in the film, she received her first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare. One review in The Tribune noted, "...it is Bipasha Basu who steals the show with her fine performance."[5] She appeared as Sonia Chauhan in the 2003 hit movie Jism alongside current boyfriend John Abraham. The movie earned her a Filmfare Best Villain Award nomination.

Besides acting, Bips, as she is fondly called, did the famous video "Tu" for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat back in her early days before she became an actress. She also made a guest appearance in Jay Sean's music video Stolen.[6]

In 2006, she won popular acclaim for her performance in an Item number during the song Beedi in the film Omkara. The song was a national hit, and Basu's pictuarisation was appreciated.[7]

In 2008 Basu starred in Race, her second collaboration with duo Abbas Mustan, with whom she debuted in Bollywood. Co-starring Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, the film performed well at the box office, and Basu's performance was appreciated by critics. Taran Adarsh of indiaFM described her performance as "her best work so far. She’s superb".[8] She also received good reviews for her role in Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor. She completed the year by appearing in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in the song Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte.

In 2009 Bipasha signed her first Hollywood venture Chaimera alongside Billy Zane.[9]

Personal life

Basu is currently dating actor John Abraham. The couple have been dating since late 2002. She previously dated fellow Bollywood actors Milind Soman and Dino Morea.

In 2006, Basu claimed to have been harassed by organizers of the India Day Parade in Edison, New Jersey. Basu was initially scheduled to lead the parade on August 13, 2006. Basu eventually appeared on stage late, according to her, because of the harassment. She said, "I wanted to attend the parade, but I could not." She explained that she was harassed physically and mentally in the car by two people who were taking her to the parade.[10]

In 2005 and 2007, UK magazine Eastern Eye named Basu the "Sexiest Woman in Asia".

  Chitrapur, Karnataka, India
Occupation : Model, Actress
Years active : 2002 - present

Amrita Rao (Konkani) born June 17, 1981)[1][2] is an Indian model and Bollywood actress.

Beginning her career as a model, Rao made her acting debut with Ab Ke Baras (2002), which went unnoticed. However, she grew into prominence when she starred in Ken Ghosh's love-story, Ishq Vishk (2003) and earned her first Filmfare nomination in the Best Female Debut category. Delivering acclaimed performances and commercial success with films like Main Hoon Na (2004) and Vivah (2006), her biggest commercial success so far, she has established herself as one of the most promising actresses of Bollywood.

Personal life

Amrita Rao was born in Chitrapur to Deepak Rao. She belongs to the Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family in Karnataka.[2][3] She has a younger sister Preetha Rao, who is also an actress. She speaks Kannada, English, Marathi, Hindi and her mother tongue, Konkani.

Career

Modeling

Rao attended C.G High School in Mumbai, and later enrolled in Sophia College to pursue a degree in Psychology. While studying there, she auditioned for an advertisement for Fairever Face Cream. To her surprise she was selected amongst 60 other contestants. After that, she got many offers and became one of the most sought-after models in India within an year.

Her appearance in Cadbury’s Perk Karwa Chaut ad and the Bru Coffee advertisement helped her receive offers from film directors in Bollywood. As she wanted to complete her education, she refused them. After earning a degree in psychology, she began her profession as an actress, working in films.

Acting

She made her acting debut with Ab Ke Baras (2002), but gained recognition only after the success of her 2003 film, Ishq Vishk, in which her portrayal as Payal earned her the girl-next door image. Success followed for her in 2004 with films like Masti and Main Hoon Na.

Her career took a setback when her following releases, Deewaar (2004), Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi (2005), Shikhar (2005), and Pyare Mohan (2006) did poorly at the box office. Things turned around when she starred in Sooraj R. Barjatya's blockbuster Vivah (2006) opposite Shahid Kapoor. The film was a universal success[5] and her performance was well appreciated by critics,[6] earning her a Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award.

Rao recently made her debut in Tollywood, with the Telugu hit Athidhi opposite Mahesh Babu.[7] Amrita had no releases in Bollywood in 2007. Amrita's first release of 2008 was My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves , which did not do very well at the box office but the subsequently released Welcome to Sajjanpur-where she played a village belle- did decently.

Born : October 2, 1942 (1942-10-02) (age 66)
  Bangalore, India
Other name(s) : Jubilee Girl
  Tomboy
Occupation : Actress, Producer
Years active : 1952-present
Spouse(s) : None

Asha Parekh (October 2, 1942) is a Bollywood actress, director, and producer. She was one of the top stars in Hindi films from 1959 to 1973 and is said to have starred in more hit films than any other actress.[1]

Early life

Asha Parekh was born into a middle-class Gujarati household on October 2, 1942 in Mahuva, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat to a Hindu father and Muslim mother, and her religious upbringing involved worshiping Sai Baba.[2] Since she was an only child, she became the centre of her parents' lives. Her mother enrolled her in Indian classical dance classes at an early age and Asha excelled at dancing to the point where she performed at stage shows and private functions.

Career

Parekh started her career as a child artiste under the screen name Baby Asha Parekh in the film Aasmaan (1952). Famed film director Bimal Roy saw her dance at a stage function and cast her at the tender age of twelve in Baap Beti (1954). The film's failure disappointed her and even though she did a couple more child roles, she quit to resume her schooling.[3] At sixteen she decided to try acting again and make her debut as a heroine, but she was rejected from Vijay Bhatt's Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959) in favor of actress Ameeta, because the filmmaker claimed she was not star material. The very next day, film producer Subodh Mukherjee and writer-director Nasir Hussain cast her as the heroine in Dil Deke Dekho (1959) opposite Shammi Kapoor which made her a huge star.[4]

The film also led to a long and fruitful association with Hussain. He went on to cast her as the heroine in six more of his films: Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963), Teesri Manzil (1966), Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969), and Caravan (1971). She also did a cameo role for his film Manzil Manzil (1984). He also got her involved in distribution of films for 21 years, starting with Baharon Ke Sapne (1967). She was primarily known as a glamour girl/excellent dancer/tomboy in most of her films, until director Raj Khosla gave her a serious image by casting her in tragedienne roles in three of her favorite films: Do Badan (1966), Chirag (1969), and Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978). Director Shakti Samanta gave her more dramatic roles in her other favorite films, Pagla Kahin Ka (1970), and Kati Patang (1970), the latter earned her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. Many important directors repeated her several times in their films, such as Vijay Anand, Mohan Segal and J.P. Dutta.

Asha acted in her mother tongue Gujarati by starring in three films at the height of her fame in Hindi films, the first film being Akhand Saubhagyavati (1963), which became a huge hit.[5]

After her days as a leading lady ended, she took on supporting roles as bhabhi (sister-in-law) and mother, but she called this the "awkward phase" of her career. So she stopped acting in films, and her friends recommended that she become a television director[6]. She took their advice and became a television director in the early 1990s with a Gujarati serial Jyoti. She formed a production company Akruti and produced serials like Palash ke Phool, Baaje Payal, Kora Kagaz and a comedy Dal Mein Kaala.[7] She was the president of the Cine Artistes' Association from 1994 to 2000. Asha was the first female chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (Censor Board) of India. She held the post from 1998 to 2001 for which she received no salary but plenty of controversy for censoring films and for not giving clearance to Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth. Later, she became the treasurer of the Cine and Television Artists Association (CINTAA) and also was later elected to be one of its officebearers.[8]

Asha stopped acting in 1995 to pursue directing and producing television serials, but her acting accomplishments were not forgotten as she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.[9] And she has continued to receive other Lifetime Achievement Awards: Kalakar Award in 2004[10]; International Indian Film Academy Awards in 2006;[11] Pune International Film Festival Award (2007);[12] Ninth Annual Bollywood Award (2007) in Long Island, New York.[13] She received the Living Legend Award from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry(FICCI).[14]

In 2008, she was seen judging dancers on a reality show Tyohaar Dhamaaka on the Indian entertainment channel 9X. [15]

Personal life

Asha has remained unmarried, claiming that her reputation of being unapproachable made people hesitate in asking her hand in marriage. There were rumors that she was romantically involved with her married director Nasir Hussain.[16][17] In her later years, Asha said that she had a longtime boyfriend but declined to elaborate on the relationship, only stating that "it was nice while it lasted."[18] She said she hadn't seen Nasir Hussain the last years of his life, as he became reclusive because of his wife's death.[19]Hussain had passed away in 2002.[20]

Today, she concentrates on her dance academy Kara Bhavan, which has produced many skilled dancers. The Asha Parekh Hospital in Santa Cruz, Mumbai is named after her because of her many contributions.[2] Her considerable wealth provides for many of her social and charitable causes.

Quotes

When asked if she missed having a husband and children, her response was: "I don’t think so. There was a time when I did want to get married. I used to love children, I still love children, but now I feel that I am happy I am not married and don’t have kids, because I don’t think I would have been able to cope up with them."[4]

Right from a young age, Sharma wished to make it big in the glamor world.[5] She was once quoted as saying "I can't see myself doing anything else." With moral support from her parents, a confident Anushka enrolled in the Elite Modeling Agency. Antara Mali

Antara Mali

Antara Mali is an Indian actress who stars in Bollywood films. She is the daughter of noted photographer Jagdish Mali.

Career

Mali made her acting debut in the 1999 film Prema Katha which was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. Varma became Mali's frequent collaborator and went on to make several movies with her, as he did with actress Urmila Matondkar. Although Mali was critically acclaimed for her performances in each of her films, she discontinued her acting career after production of her last film (Mr Ya Miss [2005] which she had also written and directed) was received poorly and critically panned. In this last film, Mali paid her tribute to the Bollywood legend Madhuri Dixit by playing an aspiring actress inspired by Madhuri in the movie Main Madhuri Diixit Banna Chahti Hoon.

Name :Amisha Amit Patel

Born :June 9, 1976 (1976-06-09) (age 32)
 Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
Other name(s) :Ameesha Patel
Occupation :Film actress
Years active :2000 - present
Spouse(s) :None

Amisha Patel (Hindi) (born June 9, 1976, also known as Ameesha Patel) is an Indian Bollywood actress. Making her acting debut in the blockbuster Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), Patel won critical praise for her performance in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), which became one of the biggest hits in the history of Hindi cinema.[1] She would subsequently star in a number of films, most of which proved unsuccessful at the box office. However, her performance in the 2006 film Ankahee, received critical recognition, and she followed it with a supporting role in the hit Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007).

Early life and family

Amisha Patel is the daughter of Amit Patel and Asha Patel, sister of Ashmit Patel and the granddaughter of the famous lawyer-politician Barrister Rajni Patel who was the Congress Pradesh Committee President of Bombay. She was born in the Breach Candy Hospital in Bombay and is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer since the age of five.[2] Her name is a blend of the first three letters of her father’s name Amit and the last three letters of her mother’s name Asha.

She studied at the Cathedral and John Connon High School in Bombay and was head girl for the academic year 1992-1993 before heading overseas to study economics at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.

After she graduated, she modeled for several products and then worked at Morgan Stanley. After returning to India she joined Satyadev Dubey's theatre group and acted in plays, upon receiving permission from her conservative parents.

Acting career

Early work and breakthrough (2000-2001)

Patel as the muslim girl Sakeena in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001), her biggest commercial success which earned the actress her first nomination for Filmfare Best Actress Award.

Her father's schoolmate, Rakesh Roshan, offered her a position in the film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000) and Amisha grabbed the opportunity.[3] The role of an exuberant college girl in love, undergoing a tortuous time at losing her lover and rediscovering a more mature relationship gave Patel scope to perform. The film was a smashing success and established Patel as a rising star, earning her awards for Best Debut at a number of award ceremonies.[4] In her second film, the Telugu language drama Badri, she starred opposite Pawan Kalyan. The film was a major success, grossing more than Rs 120 million in India.[5]

2001 saw her appearing in Anil Sharma's controversial cross-border romance, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, alongside Sunny Deol. Patel signed on much before she shot into the limelight with Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai and was selected among 500 newcomers who auditioned for the film.[6] It went on to become the top-grossing film of the year, as well as the biggest hit of the 21st century, earning Rs 973 million in India.[7] Set during the 1947 Indo-Pakistani conflicts, it featured Patel as Sakeena, a Muslim girl who finds refuge in Deol's house during the riots, and subsequently falls for him. Her performance was praised, and won her the Filmfare Special Performance Award. IndiaFM's Taran Adarsh concluded "Despite being one-film-old, Amisha Patel deserves full marks for handling the complex role with elegance. She looks the character she is portraying and impresses with a natural performance."[8] The film was perceived as being excessively anti-Pakistani.[9]

These successes were followed by a series of films that flopped at the box-office. In Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar (2001), she played a successful singer who was abandoned by her mother at the time of her birth.

Downslide (2002-2006)

In 2002, she had four continuous flops though her last release, Humraaz, became one of the highest grossing films of the year at the box office, and her performance earned her a nomination for Filmfare Best Actress Award. The Abbas-Mustan marital thriller, inspired by the 1998 Hollywood film A Perfect Murder, saw her play a negative role for the first time. She played the girlfriend of Akshaye Khanna, who marries Bobby Deol to grab his wealth – but, seeing Bobby's honesty, her character surrenders to him. She also starred in Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai, in which she played a career-oriented young woman who rejects the advances of the film's hero. In Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage, she plays the role of Sapna who is caged in protective custody of her own father. She co-starred opposite Hrithik Roshan for the second time in this film. Unlike their successful pairing in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, the film proved to be a disappointment and resulted in a critical and commercial failure.

In 2005 she starred in the murder mystery Vaada playing the role of Arjun Rampal's wife who is tracked by her former crazed lover. Her next release was Elaan. The film saw her play a reporter. She later appeared in Ketan Mehta's historical epic film Mangal Pandey: The Rising where she played the role of a Bengali widow who gets rescued from committing Sati by a British Commanding Officer. The film, which saw her appearing sans make-up for the first time,[10] did an average business and became the third highest grossing movie of the year.[11]

Patel featured in six films in 2006, all which failed commercially. She first starred in Mere Jeevan Saathi, a production that had been delayed since 2004. The film, directed by Suneel Darshan, is inspired from the 1987 Hollywood thriller Fatal Attraction. She was then seen as a blind girl in Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai, another delayed production since 2002. The film had a very small release and flopped badly though it received mixed reviews with some critics describing it as outdated.[12] In Teesri Aankh: The Hidden Camera, she played the role of a mute girl who witnesses a murder. She learned the sign language in order to fit the role.[13]

Renewed success (2006-present)

Patel's fifth release in 2006, Ankahee, earned her critical praise despite its failure at the box office.[14] The film saw her play the role of a wronged wife and a mother who tries to save her marriage life after her husband's extramarital affair. Diganta Guha from Hindustan Times noted "...it's Amisha's performance that remains in your mind. She is dignity personified in the film, playing a woman betrayed in marriage, going all out to save it and in the end choosing her own path."[15]

Later that year, she starred along with Akshaye Khanna and Priyanka Chopra in Dharmesh Darshan's Aap Ki Khatir, a remake of the 2005 Hollywood film The Wedding Date. The film saw her play a side role for the first time reprising the role played by Amy Adams.

After appearing in a series of box office flops during 2002-2006, Amisha finally saw success in 2007 with the moderately successful romantic comedy Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. playing the role of Karan Khanna's blabbermouth wife who is able to hold her husband's gay leanings mainly because she is sweet and vulnerable. She later starred in super hit movie Bhool Bhulaiyaa as the rejected adopted girl opposite Akshay Kumar who is accused of trying to disrupt the marriage of her childhood crush.

Patel's only release of 2008 was Kunal Kohli's Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, co-starring alongside Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji. She appeared in an item number essaying the cameo role of Khan's girlfriend. Her dumb bimbo act won her accolades as well as her bikini in the song Lazy Lamhe,[16] for which she learned scuba diving.[17] The film flopped at the box office despite receiving positive reviews from critics.[18]

As of 2009, Patel will be seen in two comic films, Run Bhola Run and Chatur Singh Two Star, that are scheduled to release on summer 2009.

Personal life

In 1999, Patel met Bollywood director Vikram Bhatt on the set of their first movie together, Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage (2002),[19] and they started dating since the film's release. Later, it caused a rift between the Patel and Bhatt families[20] with Amisha running through a financial crisis after her parents used all her hard-earned money for their personal satisfaction causing misunderstandings between Patel and her parents.[21]

In July 2004, Amisha sent a legal notice to her father for mismanaging her accounts and assets amounting to Rs 120 million and demanding the money back.[22] She then appeared in two of Bhatt's films that include Elaan (2005) and his semi-biographic Ankahee (2006) and rumors were spread on March 2006 that the couple were ready to wed.[23]

In January 2008, rumors were spread that the couple broke their five-year relationship. Bhatt confirmed the break-up in a conversation with Mid-Day saying, "Yes I am not denying the fact that the affair is over, but what's the point of going into the past and talking about why and when it happened?"[24] On March 12, 2008, Patel was spotted with London-based businessman Kanav Puri at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.[25] In June 2008, she confirmed their relationship as she said in an interview with Mid-Day, "I did not admit to Kanav sooner because he's very special and I did not want to jinx it. It was too precious for me to talk about it to people. It's almost six months now and now I am feeling secure and now I know our relationship is too strong for anything or anyone to come between us."[26] Later, gossip columnists linked Patel to director Kunal Kohli before the release of their film, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (2008),[27] and the media also reported that she got married to Puri but she denied these rumors.[28]
