Raadhika (Now Raadhika Sarathkumar)(Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil)

Raadhika (Now Raadhika Sarathkumar)
    (Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil)

Born:
September 21, 1963 (age 45)
Flag of India Chennai, India
Other name(s): Radhika Years active :25 Spouse(s) :R. Sarath Kumar

Radhika is a veteran Tamil actress, successful entrepreneur and producer. She is the founder of Radaan Mediaworks, which has produced many successful serials like Chithi, Selvi and Arasi.

Personal life

Raadhika is the daughter of the late Tamil actor and comedian, Mohan R. Radha. Her mother is a Sri Lankan. She has a younger sister named Nirosha (Niroja), who is also an actress. Actor and politician R. Radharavi is Radhika's older stepbrother.

She is married to actor Sarath Kumar, with whom she has a son named Rahul. Rahul was born in 2004. She was married twice prior to marrying actor Sarathkumar. Her first marriage to the Malayalee actor-cum-director, Pratap K. Pothan, ended in divorce. As did her second marriage to Richard Hardy, who is a British national and by whom she has a daughter named Rayanne Hardy.

Fellow actress-cum-writer-cum-director Suhasini Mani Ratnam is a close friend of Radhika, who has been with her during her hard times and lent a shoulder. Radhika and Suhasini hit it off during their first meeting for a film shoot and went on to become thick friends. Though Radhika was very good at acting, her make-up and hair styles were much wanting. Suhasini at her peak being a serious competitor for Radhika, has been Radhika's helping hand in redefining her looks and life. Suhasini in fact got an approval from Director Vasanth, of Keladi Kanmani, a come-back movie of Radhika, to be with Radhika on her sets and be her hair dresser and make-up artist. People still admire their friendship though both of them have gone ahead in different work paths after their peak stardom. Some of her other good friends in the film fraternity are Saritha and Sripriya.

Film Career

Raadhika Sarathkumar has acted in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi as well as Malayalam films.

After becoming successful in cinema, Radhika wanted to do something different and decided to take on the small screen, a venture that everyone thought was a mistake she would regret.[citation needed] But determined to pursue something she believed in, namely producing her own TV software under the Radaan TV banner, she pressed on. That was in 1994. After some initial hiccups, the company re-emerged successfully as Radaan Mediaworks (I) Ltd in 1999, and by 2008, has a annual turnover exceeding Rs.10 crore. In 2004, the company ventured into film production in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi markets. Radaan has plans to enter into Hindi television market. [1]

In recent years she has acted as the title character in several hit megaserials produced by her company, Radaan Mediaworks. Her first hit drama was "Chitti", a 488-episode serial in which she portrayed the main character, Saradha. The serial was widely watched and praised throughout the Tamil-speaking world. Fresh off the success of "Chitthi", Radhika went on to produce another, longer Tamil serial, the 757-episode "Annamalai", in which she once again played the major role. Her co-star in both these first two serials was the veteran actor Sivakumar, with whom she was often paired in films as well. However in "Annamalai", he played her eldest brother. She is currently playing a dual role in the teleserial Arasi, the sequel to the teleserial Selvi.

Radha(Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil)

Radha
(Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil)

Radha (born 1965) is an Indian actress popular in the 80s and early 90s. She was popular in the Tamil film industry for more than a decade. She has acted in numerous movies with top actors of the South Indian cinema heroes from Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Sathyaraj, Prabhu, Vijayakanth to Karthik, Suresh, Mohan, N. T. Rama Rao, Mohanlal, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh etc. She has acted in over 200 movies in 5 indian languages (Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi).

Personal life

Radha hails from Kerala. She is married to a successful hotelier Rajasekharan Nair and has two daughters & a son. Since her marriage she has settled in Mumbai and is into restaurant business with her husband. She pursues her undying passion for the Arts by continuing classical dance lessons alongside her eldest daughter. She has also recently performed at the famous Chidambaram Natarajar temple which she claims was her dream. Her sister Ambika is also a famous actress.

Career

Radha was spotted by director Bharathiraja and was cast as a young teenager, and cast in Alaigal Oyvathillai in 1981 opposite then newcomer Karthik and named her Radha. The young heroine took everyone by storm in her very first movie. Soon Radha became a hit started acting alongside heroes like Karthik, Mohan and Suresh.

Dubbed as the Saroja Devi of the 80's, between Payum Puli and Rajathi Raja, Radha was the uncrowned Queen of Kollywood. And by the end of eighties, Radha had almost completed a decade of complete dominance in the South. But still, the tag of a great actress still evaded her and though she came up with some spirited performances in movies like Amman Kovil Kizhakale, the label of a glamour doll stuck with her.

Kollywood Career

After a string of movies where she co-starred with the second line heroes of Tamil movie industry, she was starting to get noticed. Gopurangal Saivathillai proved her acting talents. She played a powerful role as a second wife of Mohan and matched the national award winner Suhasini (who played the first wife) in this movie. Radha played a small role in Tik Tik Tik, a Kamal Haasan starrer, big budget movie. Tik Tik Tik, though was a small role, did Radha some good by taking her into big budget movies and played a significant role in her career. Shen then starred in a number of Kamal movies like Oru Kaithiyin Diary, Thoongathey Thambi Thoongathey, Kathal Parisu, Jappanil Kalyanaraman and many of them were super duper hits.

Radha starred along with super star Rajinikanth. Rajini and Radha too made a great screen pair and the duo acted in many movies like Nan Mahan Alla, Paayum Puli, Sivappu Suriyan, Engeyo Ketta Kural etc . The versatile producers AVM exploited this success formula to the core.

Her major break came from her mentor Bharathiraja. Radha was cast in the movie opposite the legendary Sivaji Ganesan. Muthal Mariyathai released in the year 1985. Radha’s striking performance matching Sivaji was a pleasant surprise of the movie. And needless to say, Radha pulled in the crowds and Muthal Mariyathai remains till date as one of the greatest late-pickup super hits in Tamil industry. After Muthal Mariyathai she got a number of challenging roles including movies like Nyaya Tharasu.

 Tollywood Career

It was Suhasini who brought Radha to Telugu industry where she ruled along with Vijayashanti. She also demonstrated her budding acting talents in very intense scenes in movies under Bharathiraja's tutelage. While she worked hard to climb the ladder and maintain success in Tamil film cinema, Tollywood (Telugu) was an entirely different story. She became the top actress without much efforts and hardworks. Radha costarred almost all the leading stars of Telugu in that period including Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Krishna, Nagarjuna and Venkatesh. In Telugu she had to face some serious competition from Vijayashanti. And Sridevi too dropped down once in a while from Mumbai to steal a hit or two. Despite this , Radha managed to act in the most number of movies opposite big heroes amongst the three.

Radha (Devanagari: राधा, IAST: Rādhā) is the principal consort of Krishna in the Srimad Bhagavatam, and the Gita Govinda of the Hindu religion.[1] Radha is almost always depicted alongside Krishna and features prominently within the theology of today's Gaudiya Vaishnava religion, which regards Radha as the original Goddess or Shakti. Radha's relationship with Krishna is given in further detail within texts such as the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Garga Samhita and Brihad Gautamiya tantra. Radha is also the principal object of worship in the Nimbarka Sampradaya, as Nimbarka, the founder of the tradition, declared that Radha and Krishna together constitute the absolute truth.[2]

Radha is often referred to as Radharani in speech, prefixed with the respectful term 'Srimati' by devout followers.

Radha the Gopi

In the story of Krishna, as told in the Mahabharata and the Bhagavata Purana, he spends much of his youth in the company of young cow-herd girls, called Gopis in the village of Vrindavan. The Mahabharata does not describe Krishna's earlier life in Vrindavan in much detail, and focuses more on the later battle of Kurukshetra but within the Bhagavata Purana the child-hood pastimes of Krishna are described very vividly. Within the Bhagavata Purana, Radha is not mentioned by name but is alluded to within the tenth chapter of the text as one of the gopis who Krishna plays with during his upbringing as a young boy. Krishna left Brindavan for Mathura at the age of 10 years and 7 months according to Srimad Bhagavatam.[3] So Radha is assumed to be also 10 years old or less when Krishna left Brindavan. It is in later texts such as the Gita Govinda where we find the story of Radha given in more detail.

Within Vaishnavism

Radha with Krishna, as painted by Raja Ravi Varma

In the Vaishnava devotional or bhakti traditions of Hinduism that focus on Krishna, Radha is Krishna's consort. For some of the adherents of these traditions, her importance approaches or even exceeds that of Krishna. She is considered to be his original shakti, the supreme goddess in both the Nimbarka Sampradaya and following the advent of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also within the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. Other gopis are usually considered to be her maidservants, with Radha having the prominent position of Krishna's favour.

Her connection to Krishna is of two types: svakiya-rasa (married relationship) and parakiya-rasa (a relationship signified with eternal love).

In the Nimbarka Sampradaya, Radha's relationship with Krishna is characterised by the svakiya-rasa, based on texts in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana and the Garga Samhita describing the wedding of Radha and Krishna. The Gaudiya tradition focuses upon parakiya-rasa as the highest form of love, wherein Radha and Krishna share loving exchanges through separation. The love the gopis feel for Krishna is also described in this esoteric manner as the highest platform of spontaneous love of God, and not of a mundane sexual nature. Proponents of the Gaudiya and Nimbarka schools of Vaishnavism give the highly esoteric nature of Radha's relationship to Krishna as the reason why her story is not mentioned in detail in the other Puranic texts.[citation needed]

Birth

Vaishnava tradition states that Radha was born in either Varshana, or Rawal, a village about 8 kilometers from Vrindavan, near present day New Delhi in India.[4] There are a number of accounts of her parentage. Her father was the king of cowherds called Vrsabhanu. Vrsabhanu was a partial incarnation of Lord Narayana while her mother Kalavati was a partial incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi.

Her worship is especially prominent in Vrindavan, the place where Krishna is said to have lived over 5000 years ago. Wherein Her importance surpasses even the importance of Krishna. Radha's love for Krishna is held within Gaudiya Vaishnavism as the most perfect primarily because of its endless and unconditional nature. Thus she is the most important consort of Krishna, 'His heart and soul', and His 'hladini-shakti' (spiritual pleasure potency).

In the Brihad-Gautamiya Tantra, Radharani is described as follows: "The transcendental goddess Srimati Radharani is the direct counterpart of Lord Sri Krishna. She is the central figure for all the goddesses of fortune. She possesses all the attractiveness to attract the all-attractive Personality of Godhead. She is the primeval internal potency of the Lord."

Nimbarka

Nimbarka was the first Vaishnava acharya to disseminate teachings about Radha.[5][6]

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu

The Bengali saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486 - 1534) is believed by many (see especially the modern-day ISKCON movement) to be an incarnation of both Radha and Krishna, simultaneously in one form. Throughout his life, Chaitanya lived as a devotee of Vaishnava tradition, not openly claiming to be any form of avatar, but in his biographies it is claimed that he revealed his divine form to some of his closer associates.[7]

Festivals

Radha (right) with Krishna at Krishna-Balarama Temple in Vrindavan

Radha's birthday is celebrated as Radhastami.During this time devotees are allowed special sanctions not normally allowed. For example, Radha's name is normally not chanted due to the possibility of committing offenses towards her. Neither are all devotees qualified to enter into her kunda, or lake, which is considered holy. On the festival day of the appearance of Radha Kunda (Radharani's lake), devotees wait up until midnight in order to bathe there. And there is much recitation of her holy names on her "appearance day" or "birthday". She is said to "appear" because she does not take birth or die, being an eternal associate of Krishna, both of whom are liberated. She is the most chaste woman, "married" to Krishna.

The foremost of the Gopis

The Padma Purana describes 18,000 cowherd-girls (gopis) among whom it says 108 are the most important. Among those 108, eight are considered more important still, and among the eight, two have a special position - Chandravali and Radharani. Of the two, Radha is considered the foremost.

Temples dedicated to Radha

  • Barsana and Vrindavan in Mathura District, Northern India contain a large number of temples dedicated to both Radha and Krishna, including the Radhavallabh Temple. [9]
  • Barsana Dham in Austin, Texas, USA, one of the largest Hindu temples in the western Hemisphere.[10]

Temple Deities in India and abroad are generally named in order of Radharani first and then Krishna. Krishna is approachable through the mercy of Srimati Radharani and no one else. So for example, if one were to enter the Govindaji temple in Vrindavan the Deities are named Radha Govinda and devotees of Krishna would pray to Radha and Govinda not just Krishna. This is because Krishna is controlled by Radharani's love.

Quotations about Radha

  • "Although the effulgence of the moon is brilliant initially at night, in the daytime it fades away. Similarly, although the lotus is beautiful during the daytime, at night it closes. But, O My friend, the face of My most dear Srimati Radharani is always bright and beautiful, both day and night. Therefore, to what can Her face be compared?" (Vidagdha-madhava 5.20)
  • "When Srimati Radharani smiles, waves of joy overtake Her cheeks, and Her arched eyebrows dance like the bow of Cupid. Her glance is so enchanting that it is like a dancing bumblebee, moving unsteadily due to intoxication. That bee has bitten the whorl of My heart." (Vidagdha-madhava 2.51)
  • "Just as Srimati Radharani is most dear to Krishna, Her bathing pond is similarly dear. Of all the gopis, She is the most beloved of the Lord." (Padma Purana)
  • "The transcendental goddess Srimati Radharani is the direct counterpart of Lord Sri Krishna. She is the central figure for all the goddesses of fortune. She possesses all attractiveness to attract the all-attractive Personality of Godhead. She is the primeval internal potency of the Lord." (Brihad-gautamiya-tantra)
  • "Among all persons, it is Sri Radha in whose company Lord Madhava is especially glorious, as She is especially glorious in His." (Rig-parisishta)
  • "Radharani is the source of spiritual inspiration" (A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada)

Husband of Radha

In a number of versions of her story, although Radha's first love is Krishna (whom she knows through her childhood) she is later forced to marry Ayanaghosh.Other traditions give the name of the husband of Radha as 'Chandrasena'

Mumbai, Maharashtra,  India

Raima Sen (Bengali: রাইমা সেন; born Raima Dev Varma on November 11, 1979) is an Indian film actress.

Early life

She is the daughter of Moon Moon Sen and the grand-daughter of legendary actress Suchitra Sen. Her sister, Riya Sen, is also in the Bollywood industry. Their father is Bharat Dev Varma, scion of the erstwhile royal family of Tripura state.

Her paternal grandmother Ila Devi, was the princess of Cooch Behar (in Bengal), whose younger sister Gayatri Devi is the Maharani of Jaipur.

Career

Sen made her debut in the film Godmother, which was a critically acclaimed success, but her minor role may have been overlooked in favour of the protagonist, played by Shabana Azmi. She then starred in the film Daman playing Raveena Tandon's daughter, where her small performance was appreciated.

Her breakthrough role came when she starred in the Rituparno Ghosh's film Chokher Bali. She won much praise for her role as the simple, submissive Ashalata. After a few more average movies she had a critically acclaimed hit in 2005 with Parineeta, where she played the playmate of the film's heroine, essayed by the debutante Vidya Balan. Since then she has had two more hits with the action thriller Dus and the Bengali film Antar Mahal (where she had a very small role). Most recently, she appeared in the film The Bong Connection (co-starring Shayan Munshi).

She has signed her first Tamil film and she is expected to do more south Indian films. She has yet, however, to play the leading role in any hit movie.

Personal life

Raima's public profile and image is much lower-key and more demure than that of her sister Riya who has been compared more to their mother. Raima is also said to resemble her grandmother much more than either her mother or her sister.[1]. Journalists who meet her describe her as easy to talk to, and devoid of starry airs.

In an interview, she says while she enjoys Mumbai's faster pace of life, its gyms and its nightclubs, she misses her family in Kolkata, her dog Cuddles, and Kolkata's street food, notably Jhal Muri and Aloo Chaat.[2]

Critics' remarks

  • It was a delightful solo performance by Rashi Bunny, as she brought to fore a range of human emotions in Bhisham Sahni's MADHAVI... it is an experiment both in its presentation by the director Arvind Gaur and its enactment by the actor Rashi. The Set and its use to my mind is indeed creative bordering on the genius. -The Hindu
  • The play was among the very rare meaningful theatre we get to watch in our city. Thought provoking, overwhelming, it left so many fighting their tears. Each person present would have identified with the double standards of our society, each person sitting there would have felt guilty of having reduced the existence of a woman to a mere object, a commodity. Each woman would have relived some part of her life.- Hindustan Times
  • All women will be able to see a part of themselves in it. The relevance of the issue makes the time setting immaterial.Even though the play is based on mythology, Madhavi. It was a delightful solo performance by Rashi Bunny, as is contemporary in its presentation and style...-India Today
  • Its 'an actor's play'... The Kathavachan style has been adopted and the actor Rashi relates to the audience in day to day baat cheet…an intense and intimate theatre experience. -The Pioneer
  • The solo performance is an experiment. Its like taking people through a journey.Even the set design is very experimental. There are blank canvasses on the stage and different colours placed in earthen pots, that symbolize the different colours of life.-First City
  • The complex story of Madhavi, her trauma, tragedy and conflicts were portrayed with great sensitivity by Rashi Bunny. The simplicity of set design, use of bamboo structures, canvasses & helped audiences to extend their imagination to grasp the diversity and multi dimensional directorial interpretation of the play.- Navbharat Times
