Roja Selvamani Telugu:రొజ is a veteran south Indian actress and politician. She has married Selvamani a Tamil Director and settled in Chennai.

Early life

Roja was born to Kumaraswamy Reddy,a native of Chittor district. Later the family moved to Hyderabad.

She did her Masters degree in Political Science from Nagarjuna University.

She learnt Kucchipudi for a few years. Her voice as a child was very rough- so many discouraged her from hoping to act in films. She had a penchant for hairdressing and makeup even at her younger age that she made the official makeup woman for her college festivals.

Film career

She entered the cine industry from Telugu films. She was first introduced in the Tamil film by director R.K. Selvamani in his film Chembaruthi paired with actor Prashanth. The movie was a blockbuster and paved the way for her in the Tamil cinema industry. She was essentially dubbed for many characters. She became popular with her songs such as (Veloor Maman) in the film Engal Aiyyah with Mamooty and (Mastana Mastana) in Rasaiyya with Prabhu Deva. She became very popular acting in films with top heroes such as Rajnikanth in Veera, Arjun Sarja in Ayudha Poojai.

Roja's career breakthrouh was in the film Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen, directed by Vikraman. She performed very well in this film in a character role. She won a lot of accolades for her characted and claimed the role to be her best ever.

Roja's 100th movie was Pottu Amman which was also a superhit.

Currently Roja is into supporting roles such as inArasu (2001) and in Parijaatham (2006).

Personal life

She is married to the director R.K. Selvamani and has moved into Andhra politics. Her hobbies are costume designing and hairstyling. Roja Selvamani and Meena are best friends.Roja and Meena, in their younger age, resembled each other so much. In fact Meena has acted as Roja's younger sister at least in 5 or 6 movies in Telugu. And it is known that Roja Selvamani did Meena's hairstyles for those two days for a song involving Meena and was much appreciated by Meena herself.
